mother and child project: Year 7

The Mother and Child project was undertaken by Year 7 pupils as part of a project with Musgrove Park Hospital's maternity and childrens wards, where the work was exhibited, and a number purchased for permanent collection. The project gave pupils an opportunity to study how the theme of the Mother and Child had been portrayed throughout history. They looked at works by Bellini, Piero della Francesca, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Picassco, Berthe Morisot, Gwen John, Mary Cassett, Diego Rivera and many others and looked at ways in which the images had portrayed the ideas of infancy/childhood and motherhhod, from the ideal represented by the Madonna and Child to the increasing personal and realistic images of recent paintings. Many pupils enjoyed the chance to look back at the time of their own birth, enjoying collecting imformation and photographs of their much younger selves.

The opportunity to exhibit their paintings greatly enhanced their pleasure and pride in their work and allowed them to see that their work was relevant in the wider context of the world. Many people who visited the hospital were also pleased to see how they made sense in the context of where they were being shown and gave such positive comments that the hospital decided to purchase some of them for permanent display.
